In the summer of 1983, two college students developed a new method of mining gold from the creeks. Using a Weedeater, the girls clipped off the tops of moss clumps growing on river bars. They then took the harvested moss upriver to some salmon drying racks where it dried for three days. The dried moss was broken up and burned on a steel sheet. When the ashes were sluiced, 25 ounces of gold were recovered. Two ounces were paid to the claim owner for the lay on his land.
This method is a variation of bar mining. Bar:mining was the earliest form of gold mining in the north.
